Hello! I am Melissa Engels, English teacher. I have 10 years of teaching experience in both Michigan and Washington. In Michigan, I taught 8th grade Language Arts and Drama, and am proud to have had an article published in a teaching magazine. In my two years at Ferndale High School, I taught Freshman English, Sophomore English, and Transitions. At Windward High School, I have taught Freshman English, Sophomore English, Honors English, Creative Writing, and Publications. I love teaching at Windward High School because of the chance to interact on a personal level with my students and colleagues, integrate curriculum between subject areas, and create lasting connections with the community.

With two precious little girls at home, free time doesn't come often! As an English teacher, I, of course, try to find time for pleasure reading and creative writing. In addition to those hobbies, I enjoy scrapbooking whenever I have a spare moment.  During the summer, my husband and I enjoy traveling to baseball stadiums around the country. The current number of major league baseball stadiums visited is at 29 and counting, with San Francisco as the most recent destination. I also cherish time spent with my family and friends.

The English department is offering a combined class as a requirement for freshman and sophomores this year.

This class is designed to run concurrently with Mr. Goldstein's and Mrs. Ruthford's U.S. History classes, enabling students to clearly see connections between subject areas and learn subject matter from both classes in a deeper and more meaningful fashion.

During the Fall 2008-2009 semester, students will experience literature, writing, and speech as studied in three major units: Non-fiction of the Civil War, Oral Traditions and Public Speaking, and Short Stories. Additionally, technical writing, vocabulary development, and grammar skills will be a continual focus of the class.

The English department is offering an Honors section of the Freshman/Sophomore English class this year. This class is designed to provide advanced students with expanded learning opportunites within the standard curriculum.

This class is designed to run concurrently with Mr. Goldstein's and Mrs. Ruthford's U.S. World History classes, enabling students to clearly see connections between subject areas and learn subject matter from both classes in a deeper and more meaningful fashion.

During the Fall 2008-2009 semester, students will experience literature, writing, and speech as studied in three major units: Non-fiction of the Civil War, Oral Traditions and Public Speaking (O, Pioneers), and Short Stories (Their Eyes Were Watching God). Additionally, close reading skills, literary terms, technical writing, vocabulary development, and grammar skills will be a continual focus of the class.

OTHER ENGLISH DEPARTMENT CLASSES

The English department continues to grow along with the Windward High School student body! In addition to the two classes (listed above) taught by Mrs. Engels, we are currently offering several other required and elective English classes taught by Ms. Busch and Mr. Lewis. For more information on these English classes, click on the teacher's name to visit his/her website.
