Unit Themes - Developing and Expanding Community: Urbanization, Empires, Belief Systems

  • How did location matter in the development of early societies?
  • Why are people willing to give up a nomadic lifestyle for a more settled existence?
  • How did the movement of people impact agriculture and religion, among other things?
  • What accounts for a simultaneous rise in spiritual and intellectual questions and developments in a wide variety of unconnected places?

PRACTICE DRAWING AFRICA over and over and over....

Stearns Reading (sorry, no electronic copy available) 1/2 the class will read Legacies of Ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt and 1/2 the class will read Legacies of Ancient Asian River Valley Civilization. You need to make a graphic organizer of the reading you are assigned (ex: Mind Map is highly suggested). Make it easy to read so you can share with other people.

Homework: Read chapter 2 (pgs. 37-57) and complete chart comparing the "new civilizations". Practice drawing Africa and Asia.

  • What are the rewards and consequences of a more integrated world?

  • Changes in Identity within and among Communities: Imperialism and Nationalism
