I personally am working on a series of books. While I don't know what they will be called when I get them published, the working title of the series is "The Breaking of the Peace", BOTP for short. The stories began as a series of daydreams about a place called Kiish, where the kings of all the countries were being manipulated by the Minstrel using song magic. Naturally, I had to work out all the rules that magic follows, what kinds of animals lived there and how they interacted with humans, and eventually what other planets and dimensions were like. It's a lot of work, but it's something I really enjoy doing. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever get around to writing the books, or if I'll just keep adding more and more background until I can't think of anything else to describe.
Of course, everything is easier if you divide it into smaller parts (thank you, 9th grade algebra teacher!), and the same thing applies to writing books. J.R.R. Tolkien didn't just sit down and write The Lord of the Rings in one fail swoop! First he had to create the languages, describe the creatures, come up with the history, and make a map of Middle Earth. Then, of course, he had to make the characters! He had to know their personalities, what they looked like, where they came from, and a lot of their personal history. Different people have different points of view, and some characters may even believe things about the history of the world that aren't true! It takes a long time to decide these kinds of things. I suggest you start with planning and work your way down. However, if you want tips on a specific topic, just click on it. If you're not satisfied with this site, which is entirely possible since I don't claim to know everything about writing fantasy, that's fine. There are plenty of other sites that you can visit for the same purpose. In fact, I encourage it. The more different points of view you know about, the better off you'll be.
