My Story
I grew up in Everett, WA with lots of access to the woods and ocean. I graduated from Everett High School and soon left for Bellingham where I began studies in Chemistry at Western Washington University (WWU). The experience was great, and I earned my BS in Chemistry with a minor in Computer Science. At this point I realized how much more there was to learn. Graduate training was what I needed and I followed a path to Materials Engineering at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB). My goal was to earn a PhD and design materials for the space industry. The field of materials is an exciting one. Consider flexible plastic displays that can be folded and tucked away in your pocket. Imagine carbon nanotubes that may one day replace steel as the structural material of choice. Or, think of diamond coated buildings that have the ability to resist the mechanical stresses of earthquakes. I still enjoy keeping up with the technological advances. However, during my graduate work I had the chance to work with local schools to bridge university resources with students. It was at this point that I realized how rewarding the teaching profession would be. Southern California was nice, but not as beautiful as our great Northwest. I completed my MS and drove I-5 back home. I then enrolled at WWU to earn my credentials in teaching.
