Student Grants Program
Grant Readers: Students at Windward write grants to access a student only grant fund. The grants involve anywhere from several students to whole classes. The grants must have a community mentor and provide a service to the community in order to be funded. We have an established grant application and a grading rubric for students to follow, and we need parents (two for each grant) willing to read and review each grant (staff and students are also readers), complete the rubric and get it back to us with a one or two week turn around. By the time a grant gets to the reading for approval stage the school is already involved and staff has been working with the student and the grant to get it reader ready. The primary goal is to work with students to revise a grant that doesn’t pass on the first try and offer reader comments and input to help with the process. NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NEEDED and we are here to help with any questions.
Related: mentors for student grant projects, ideas for student grants (needs in the community that students could help meet), Contributions – the Gates Foundation has supported our student grant fund since 2004 but this March – we will have used all of these funds (we are required to use our remaining balance by March!). To keep our student grant program operational – we need to replenish this fund – we are working on donations from some of our partners (though the challenge is that most of our partners are also non profits!) – parents can contribute to this fund beginning in March.

Community Service Day
Community Service Day – volunteers and refreshments – twice a year (Fall and Spring) we do all school community service days were students go out into the community in teams of 12 – 16 and work with a local non profit/service organization doing a variety of service jobs. Parents are invited to join us or could provide a snack for our student and teacher workers.

WASL Weeks
Snack Help – We try to have healthy snacks for students during WASL weeks – because there are several weeks of testing – help in this area is very appreciated and takes the burden off teachers to buy/make snacks.
Windward Scholarship
Windward Scholarship - last year one of our teachers initiated a college scholarship fund for Windward Seniors and with the generosity of a few parents and the Windward staff – we were able to give away two scholarships of $750 to two of our students (one attending WWU and the other Central U). Working with the Dollars for Scholars foundation – we were also able to add to the value of those scholarships (doubling one of them!) to send off two seniors with some tangible financial help. This year we have collected $500 for that fund so far. Parents can donate to this fund through The Bank of the Pacific (5629 3rd Ave) in Ferndale. The account is called, “Windward Community Scholarship Fund.”

Senior Culminating Project
Project Panelists – We need parents as panelists for the Senior Project presentations that happen at Windward in January. All Seniors must complete a Senior Culminating Project and the final step is a presentation of their work. The obligation is one evening.
